I’ve never made a New Year’s resolution. It could never work for me being one to sometimes procrastinate and end up doing most things last minute. One would ask how I survived uni with excellent grades, but the truth is- I work better under pressure. That’s just me.
However, something amazing happened at the end of last year. I made a plan for this year without fully realizing that, and I stuck with it! I called it strategizing instead, but isn’t that another case of ‘po-TAY-to’ and ‘po-TAH-to?
Strategizing sounded more complex as to planning which meant that I’d naturally gravitate towards that term. I don’t like simple.
Well, to get to the meat and potatoes of this post..
1. Determine your end goals
I day dream quite often. Don’t know why, but it seems to me it may be a sign that something is lacking or inadequate.. daydreaming is yearning for something exciting and oftentimes not within your grasp. You have to work for it right?
Now, what I’ve started to do it noting or writing these things down. Whenever I find a particular though recurring in my daydreams, then I know it is definitely part of my goals.
Another key method to determine your end goals is to take a step back from everything you are doing at the moment, literally everything and try to envision your future as a 40 0r 45 year old. Close your eyes, clear your mind and submerge yourself into the life you see yourself living at that time.
This exercise should be repeated as much as you have to. Surely, you are bound to discover and determine your end goals using these 2 methods. Now that you have, what will you do about it?
2. Plan for it
Do not ever try to make a plan or strategize (as I’ll call it) without have a distinctive goal. You know the quickest way to waste your own time? It’s that, and now that I’m much older with full understanding of time as a concept, nothing BURNS as much as wasted time.. and effort!
Planning requires deep thinking but it’s much easier with a set goal. Example, you want to be millionaire by 26 . That is the goal and before you take any steps, you have to ask yourself;
-what am I going to do about this?
-what valuable skills of mine can I monetise to achieve this?
-what classes will I take to be an expert at this skill?
-what sacrifices will I have to make to inch closer to my goals?
These are some sample questions you need to ask yourself first. Before you’ll know it, you will emerge with a plan for your goal. Your goal could be anything.. kids, purchasing a home, strengthening your spirituality, changing your diet, dating and what not. One thing is for sure, you need proper planning to build your best life.
Another key thing about planning is that it generates critical thinking and analysis of your current situation and your end goal. What happens is, you will be able to identify your challenges or roadblocks. With that, you will come to identify the things you need to work on first and compromises you will have to make in pursuit of that goal.
3. Hold on to the why
Realistically, you will lose your focus from time to time. With the age of social media comes a lot a distraction. Doesn’t it seem everyone’s in everyone else’s face? People will question and judge your motives. Some people go as far as ridiculing your life goals.
Try not to get carried away with that, which is why you must hold on to your ‘WHY‘. And not to put all the blame on social media, distraction also comes from within as well as family and friends.
There is always a reason for everything. Every plan, every action, every laugh, just everything. So hold on to why you are pursuing your goals. For this to work, you need to feel strongly about your why.
If buying a home is your goal. You have ask yourself what that will do for you or why do you want to purchase a home. If it will make you happy in life. Then your why becomes ‘pursuit of happiness’.
When you hold on to this, setbacks and distraction will not be able to deter you from achieving your goals which ultimately lead to building your best life.
